It's a full moon tonight!

Pardon my loose tongue (that may sound slightly racist) but...
freakin' white people, dude!

I'm hoping you can already tell where this blog is going, or certain themes that it may be linked to. The full moon party on Ko Phangan island is a highly attended event by various party people from around the globe ( & after observing the patterns of travelers we've come across and noticing the mere specks of colored travelers we've met, the white westerners have dominated majority of these encounters). These parties are notorious for their excess in lush lifestyle activities and absolute madness that follows in consequence.

Every full moon of the month, Haad Rin beach is transformed into a massive rave consisting of over a thousand people that come together to worship the luminous glow of the moon over the white sands (that wasn't supposed to sound cult-like.. haha). Make-shift bars selling buckets of sweet misery, glow-in-the-dark painting stalls, and concessions for those with the late night munchies are all various booths that parameter Haad Rin beach. Not only do these booths take up a fraction of the beach, but several high energy clubs mark their territory by attracting techno and electro lovers, flame throwers and absolute dancing lunatics. (Pretty fun around these parts!).

We began our night pre-partying with some of our bungalow buddies from this resort, making predictions as to how many people will be attending and how crazy this night will be. It was funny that we finally got to meet some of these people since we've been hiding out in our bungalow or have been wandering around our area over the past few days because several of them mentioned they've never seen us before. We've been here. We're just not that into staying out too late and drinking too much, our livers and bodies have suffered. At about 11 p.m., we made our way out to the full moon party by squeezing into a bigger tuk-tuk, appropriate enough to carry about 8 people. Our little Finnish friend didn't have a seat so he had to hang onto the bars outside.

The name of our beach resort written on our forearms so that we don't forget where we stay... in case we lose coherence and coordination.

Wahoo! Excited for the full moon partaaaay

Ride

We could feel the energy in the air as we drove to Haad Rin beach. Several party people were roaming the streets wearing their craziest party fits, some even went as far as painting their faces and making shirts for the event. We also saw taxis, tuk-tuks, and motor bikes zoom past us, racing to get to the party. People were excited. And they had every right to be because once we unloaded.... it was on and everyone had their intentions and almost conviction to have the best night they possibly could.

When we arrived, we were greeted with 100 baht wristbands that were so legit! Not kidding, look at this:

There were people everywhere! We managed to take several videos of the evening but the wi-fi is crappy in our bungalow, so I'll hold off on that till later to post here. Here are a few photos we snagged of the night:

everyone was covered with that glow-in-the-dark paint and drinking buckets!

Free sex, apparently.
This was taken when we went to buy some french fries and this Aussie we began to converse with, ended up eating all of it! What the eff! It was a causal and distracting conversation for a few moments until we looked down at it was all freakin' gone. Thanks, dude. Really.

Yeah, good until people start puking all over the place and you forget where your pants are. (This did not happen to me, btw)

Choosing my poison

A full moon, indeed. It's been raining over the past few days and several clouds made a permanent mark in the sky so this was the only manageable photo we had of the moon.

I'll note some highlights, observations and themes to the night through my unfocused lenses here because some of it was a blur if you know what I mean...
  • Alcohol makes people brave. We walked towards a crowded area where people huddled to watch several guys jump rope (note: this rope was lit on fire!). We have a funny video:

  • Uh, people can't dance. If they really are dancing, then it must be called the Drunken Two-step cause I felt no motivation to dance amongst Sloppy Joe's
  • The music had no variety. I really enjoy electro and trance music, but a lot of it was played over and over again. I suppose being on drugs could numb some people to it-- not me, though.
  • Make-out sessions galore! This deserves another 'alcohol makes you brave' theme. I'm sure people get more and more attractive once the alcohol sinks in. Hahaha. I don't remember the last time I've seen so many people making-out at once
  • White people are crazy (only saying this because majority of them were)! If I need to stand corrected, then tourists are crazy! It felt like people were caged animals that were finally unleashed. Doing back-flips, making sand angels, guzzling down buckets and buckets, possibly having sex on the beach, drug consumption, and just crazy all-night partying.
  • Several men were peeing into the ocean
  • Paid 10 baht every time we needed to go to the bathroom (except the 2nd time, my homegirl tending the bathroom remembered me and let us both in for 5, lol)
  • Gave my bucket of alcohol to a random Thai man because I didn't want it anymore. And he took it.
  • Designated K.O. areas for a night's sleep
  • Remember seeing a few hipsters, made me miss home a bit! Oh, Blow Up days...
  • The beach was disgusting. Disgusted at the filth on the beautiful beach left by all the drunkards. I couldn't help but feel a little hurt because of all the trash people left behind. People were even throwing trash into the ocean. I don't know how many bottles I tripped over and straws I accidentally pushed deeper into the sand.
Maybe it was the unaccounted flow of alcohol people drank that took control of them and being in such an environment, being tourists who needed a vaycay away from their stressful lives abroad and needed that outlet or could it be just what people needed to do to finally find sanity and release all of their inhibitions? Whatever it was, I can't help but think the moon had a little responsibility in all of this.

This full moon party was a really interesting experience. I met some interesting people, over stimulated by the amount of glow-in-the-dark paint all over people, danced into the night, and rested on the beach staring into the ocean.

Charmed, Ko Phangan. I really am.
