Traveling through Asia is cheap, like ridiculously cheap. We decided that while we were traveling throughout these next few months that we would go the cheapest way possible in order to evenly distribute our money on expenses. Bus rides are typically favorable for backpackers to get around throughout Asia for these few reasons: 1) cost efficient (fares run from 20-less than a 100 bucks from north of Thailand all the way to the south, wish I had the distance provided, but I don’t), 2) more accessible (many independent travel agencies host their own tours and own a mini-van) 3) a way to appreciate the beautiful sights along the way from and to destinations.
On the way to Bangkok from Chiang Mai, I counted a total of 9 bus rides that we’ve been on so far being here. I can name only 2 of these 9 that were absolutely unpleasant. The first being the bus ride to Luang Prabang from Vang Vieng for the reason being it was winding and somewhat disgusting from the very audible nauseated bus soundtrack. The second being the recent one we took to Bangkok from Chiang Mai. I usually am not picky or overly sensitive in terms of transportation since I’ve kept in mind that “you get what you pay for”, but this 10 hour bus ride just felt entirely uncomfortable. I had a thin blanket and cold air blasting at me (in which I managed to dodge a bit by taping a piece of paper to cover the circulation), oh and not to mention a sore back and bottom from the bumpy roads on the way here. I really hate to complain but sometimes I feel like ranting. Lara has her own beef with the recent bus rides since a bag full of cheese kept falling on her head as she was trying to sleep. That sucks. Hahah.
I hope the next few bus rides underway are a lot easier to endure. I need some sleep… any sleep.
